The Madonna of the Trail, Vandalia, Illinois
The Illinois Madonna can be found at the corner of 4th and Gallatin Streets in Vandalia, on the southwest corner of the historic Illinois Court House.
The Madonna was dedicated on October 26, 1928 in what Fern Ioula Bauer calls the largest celebration ever staged in Fayette County Illinois. Among those participating in the dedication ceremony were Judge Harry S.Truman, Mrs. John Trigg Moss, White and Astela, comedy acrobats and Madam Zaza with her "Educated Canines".
The Monument stood on the south side of the Court House until 1939 when it was rededicated in its current location. The inscriptions honor the Cumberland road and Abraham Lincoln
