The Madonna of the Trail Vandalia Illinois
Vandalia was the capital of Illinois from 1819 to 1839 and was the western terminus of the National Road. The road opened in 1839. Abraham Lincoln served as an Illinois legislator in Vandalia and was intrumental in having the capital moved to Springfield.
