The Madonna is in a small park on the edge of a golf course adjacent to Snyder Park in Springfield Ohio. The inscriptions honor George Rogers Clark and the National Road. A Clark County Historical Marker in Snyder Park discusses the National Road. This was the first Madonna of the Trail, dedicated on July 4, 1928.
West of Springfield, US 40 passes a Madonna of the Trail statue in a small park near the Mad River. The National Road crossed the river here through a two-lane "double-barreled" covered bridge. -- Karl Raitz Guide to The National Road, Karl Raitz editor.
The Madonna was originally placed on the grounds of the nearby Masonic Home. Brusca explains that this statue is the only one not placed on the National Old Trails Road. Here the National Road and the Old Trails Road took different routes.
