The Madonna Rescued
The Bethesda Madonna of the Trail statue began to list forward and to the right on Thursday, Dec. 9th, 2004 as a sinkhole developed near the Bethesda Post Office caused by a broken watermain.
"By Friday morning the base, which is normally two feet above ground, was only seven inches above ground."
(Montgomery County Gazette)
The DAR had the Statue sawed from its base and removed to the Public Safety Training Academy in Rockville. The memory box could not be recovered until the pedestal had been moved.
There's going to be a great emptiness there until it returns, I think it's a great landmark that people look to. It let's us know where we came from. -- Montgomery County Councilman Howard A. Denis
